CIEL Nett Zero Carbon and UK Livestock 2020
Sundown Comment
This report identifies several significant opportunities for the ruminant industry to reduce greenhouse emissions, the top three are:
1) Improve the efficiency of resource utilisation
2) Increase the production of homegrown feeds (especially protein)
3) Increase the use of domestic agricultural by-products not suitable for inclusion in food
KPIs to reduce greenhouse emissions
1) Increase production of homegrown protein to minimise imported protein
2) Improve the utilization of homegrown protein
• Utilize rumen degradable protein more effectively
• Reduce total dietary protein levels to recommended levels
3) Dung score to check for fibre levels
4) Check geographical source of ingredients
Nutritionally Improved Straw (NIS) is made from a UK sourced agricultural by-product. NIS is well known to maintain rumen function in high performance diets more efficiently that fibres from non-forage sources
NIS is a key ingredient to balance high protein, home grown forages to assist ruminant farmers to reduce green-house emissions
